This model will show you an typical inflow situation for salty North Sea water (violet) into the Baltic Sea (clear). The Saltwater needs to pass the shallow areas in the Western Baltic. The Skagerrak is in this model at the left side from here the saltwater starts to fill the basins of Skagerrak, Kattegat and Belt Sea. As soon as these basins are filled with salty North Sea water (violet) the water hits the Darss sill. This sill is a natural barrier between the Belt Sea and the Arkona Sea. The saltwater will rise in the western Balti till is flows over the sill into the Arkona Sea alw2ays covered by a layer of brackish Baltic water (clear).
