The both common Syngnathus species (S. rostellatus and S. acus) are difficult to discern. Both have a round terminal snout with a diameter not bigger than the eye diameter. Both species have pectoral fins and a tail fin. Apart from terminal size, the number of circular bony rings between the head and dorsal fin is the criterion for discerning the species. This however is impossible with living animals. Maximum sizes range from 18 cm (S. rostellatus) to around 30 cm (S. acus). The Greater Pipefish (S. acus) is no common in the Baltic.
