European flounder (Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758))

by Dirk Fleischer last modified Jan 26, 2009 11:55
Dorsoventrally flattened. Mostly (70%) right-eyed. “Upper side”, i.e. eyed side (right side) with rough scales along lateral line. Additional rough scales along bases of dorsal and anal fin. Coloration variable. Often with red spots on eyed side. However, spots are no distinct identification criterion as they are not necessarily present/visible and other flatfish also show red spots. Maximum size ca. 60 cm (4 kg). Euryhaline species, i.e. flounders tolerate a wide salinity range and are often found in estuaries and river mouths.
